在那个高扬“时代”的时代,林语堂重新发掘中国传统文化的资源,提倡明清语录体的笔调,并以其“抒情哲学”在一定程度上修正新文化运动中部分知识分子对于中国古书的激进态度,使得中国传统文化与现代性的衔接成为可能。同时,在中国古文与西语“familiar essay”之间自然转换,用充满智慧、温柔敦厚、不温不火、极得和平气象的小品文创作,笑谈社会人生。其圆融与逸出,既走出了传统文学的“载道”观,又显示出“开眼看世界”的态势,“幽默”“闲适”“性灵”具有了现代性的文化特征。

Lin Yutang made it possible to line up Chinese classics and modernity by somewhat modifying the intellectuals’nihilism attitude to Chinese ancient books in the way of“lyric philosophy”.In the era of“a uplifting time”,Lin rediscovered sources of Chinese traditional culture and advocated a writing tone of quotation style in the Ming and the Qing dynasty.He optimistically commented society and life in his wisdom,tender and peaceful essays,which made him walk between Chinese classics and western“familiar essay”,devoting to modern cultural characteristics of humor,leisure and soul.His works with mildness and elegance not only refreshed the viewpoint of“convey moral teachings”in traditional literature,but showed his attitude to“open eyes to see the world”.
