Cathleen Ni Houlihan is a nationalistic drama written by William Butler Yeats in 1902,setting a background of the 1798 armed uprising in Ireland. As the play puts great emphasis on Irish men who perform a vital role in the independence of Ireland,it ignores the sufferings of Irish women. This paper analyzes the image of Irish women who are oppressed by both local patriarchy and British colonialism from the perspective of Spivak’s postcolonial feminism. Then,it traces how Irish women are constructed as the other of the Irish patriarchal society and the British marginal areas, and how they lose their rights to speak for themselves and keep silent.
