An Analysis of the Construction of Dress Discourse and Feminine Consciousness in Martha Quest

多丽丝莱辛是当代英国最重要的作家之一。在其代表作品《玛莎奎斯特》中,莱辛通过对女主人公玛莎服饰的描写,建构了两种判然不同的服饰话语。玛莎与奎斯特太太在着装上的争执实际上反映了新旧价值观念的交锋。而玛莎对服饰话语的执着争取及其反叛行为都标志着她女性意识的觉醒。莱辛笔下的这个诉诸“暴力”的“暴力女孩”用时代精神武装自己的同时,向男权社会发出了殖民时代的现代女性的呼声和诉求。

Doris Lessing is one of the most important writers in contemporary Britain.In Martha Quest,one of Lessing’s representative works,Lessing constructed two different dress discourses by depicting the heroine Martha’s dress.The dispute between Martha and Mrs.Quest about dress actually reflected the confrontation between old and new values.And Martha’s persistent pursuit of dress discourse and her incredible rebellious behavior marked the awakening of her feminine consciousness.The“violent girl”who resorted to“violence”in Lessing’s work armed herself with the spirit of the times,and voiced the appeals of modern women living in a male-dominated society in the colonial era.
