Objective To identify future research hot spots, challenges and opportunities,as well as research directions,in the field of otology,by reviewing applications and funding of the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC)related to hearing research in the past 5 years and summarizing relevant research progress and achievements funded by NSFC in recent years. Methods Data of NSFC applications and funding of hearing related projects from2015 to 2019 were reviewed using the Excel and GraphPad7.0 software.Important research progress and achievements funded by NSFC were summarized. Conclusion From 2015 to 2019,the number of applications for NSFC funding related to hearing research increased rapidly, while increase of NSFC funding was slow with little change in funding intensity and a year by year decrease in funding ratios, resulting in gradually increasing competition among hearing research applications.Supported NSFC funding, basic research of hearing in China has made a handful of achievements, some reaching advanced and leading levels by international standards, furthering international influence of hearing research in China.
