As a leading scholar in the field of planning history,theory,and education,and the recipient of many professional awards in urban and regional planning,Professor John Friedmann(1926-2017)has been called“the greatest planning scholar of the twentieth century,and undoubtedly so in the field of planning theory”.This article mainly probes how Friedmann’s actual planning experience shaped his critical thinking about planning practice,with the stark paradigm shift in his thinking and the broad theoretical guidance for planning practitioners highlighted.This overview of Friedmann’s intellectual journey concludes with brief remarks regarding the continued relevant thinking towards planning theory,practice,and education.Even though the contemporary planning context may be significantly changed,John Friedmann’s quest for a general theory of planning will continue to influence planning deliberations.
