The key competence of a certain subject has been a hot research topic,and an important way to develop students'key competence of English subject is the teaching in English reading.The paper aims to analyze the connotation of the key competence of English subject in secondary schools,and to discuss how to develop it through teaching English reading by designing a reading lesson for the students majored in furniture design and making.
