摘要
Identity changes is one of the most important issues in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel An Artist of the Floating World. However, being a stream-of-consciousness novel,it is hard for readers to grasp a complete identity changing process of the protagonist due to the ambiguities caused by fragmented plots, complicated timeline and unreliable memory-based narration. Therefore,a relatively new approach, spatial analysis,is applied to study the underlying meanings inferring identity changes that hidden in the scattered spaces.By analyzing the symbolic meanings of different spaces and comparison of the same place at different times, the identity changes of Masuji Ono is clearly reflected—a dynamic process including identity construction, loss and at last reconstruction.
