The first age of digital fabrication was dominated by subtractive technologies;the second by additive processes. For some time now the emphasis and the interest of experimental computational designers has shifted to automated processes of assembly.Starting with Gramazio and Kohler’s ground-breaking experiments almost 15 years ago,the creative adaption of industrial robots to building and construction has already produced significant architectural and technical results. This article reviews in particular the theoretical premises of the Bartlett school of "Computational Brutalism",marked by the showy display of oversized, chunky components and by aggregation of discrete parts.
