Subtle Meanings of "Respect" in the Elegant Expressions in Spring and Autumn Period

作为当代社会主义核心价值观之一的"敬业",其源头可以追溯到先秦时期的"敬"观念,这一观念在商周青铜器铭文、《诗经》《尚书》等文献中已经具有敬天、敬事、敬己等多层意味。春秋时期贵族文化人的言论被视为"嘉言善语",载录于《左传》《国语》中,对"敬"多有论说,尤其在强调普遍的警戒心态、反对怠惰自弃等方面深化"敬"的观念,包括对一己的自律自重和对职业的认真负责、对他人的尊敬等,共同构成春秋嘉言"敬"的内涵微义。

As one of the core values of contemporary socialism,"dedication" can be traced back to the concept of "respect" in the pre-Qin period.The concept had already had various meanings such as respect for heaven,respect for things,respect for yourself and so on in bronze inscriptions of Shang and Zhou dynasties,Book of Songs,Book of Documents and other literatures.The remarks of aristocratic cultural people in the Spring and Autumn period(770 B.C-476 B.C) were recorded as "elegant expressions" in Zuozhuan(Legend of Spring and Autumn Century by Zuo Qiuming),and Guoyu,in which there are various interpretations of"respect",which commonly emphasized the mentality of alertness and were opposed to idling and self discarding to deepen the concept of "respect",including self-discipline,self-respect,respect for occupation and respect for others,etc.,all of which co-constitute the subtle meanings of "respect" in the elegant expressions in Spring and Autumn period.
