How Terminology Developed and Is Developing in the Western World: Introduction on the Idea of “Terminology Is a Scientific Research Program”

This article is a brief selection based on a dissertation titled“The Reception of Eugen Wüster s Work and the Development of Terminology”written by the Canadian scholar Angela Campo.Meanwhile,the author also adds some new developments in the terminology field.In the history of terminology,Eugen Wooster s work,has been an important inspiration for terminology research studies.Wüster is recognized as an important figure in modern terminology,as a pioneer of Terminology.Since the early 1990s,with the rapid development of science/technology and related fields,new theoretical approaches to terminology,which seem strongly to hold a critical attitude towards Wooster s work and caused a hot debate.These approaches have also identified new methods and applications for terminology.The“methodology of scientific research programs”advocated by Lakatos(1978),applied as an interpretive model,proved that terminology is now perceived as a research program.In Lakatos terms,terminology is becoming a stronger theoretical and descriptive discipline.
