Studies of war and sexual violence requires the perspective of comparative history. What kept victims silent? Under what circumstances will they speak up? In comparative context,we can examine what constitutes the particularities and generalities of the prostitution of comfort women imposed by the Japanese Empire. We can also scrutinize what distinguishes the describable experience with sexual violence from the unspeakable experience. We may also ask why we make the above distinction and how we should speak about the experiences that were traumatized and stigmatized in history. This article also considers questions related to what comparative history can and cannot help us achieve. Answering these questions will help us move the studies of war and sexual violence towards the methodology of comparative history.
