William Faulkner can be called as a master of smell symbolism and olfactory narrative.Focusing on Faulkner famous short fiction A Rose for Emily, this article intends to discuss olfactory narrative from three perspectives, namely implicit narrative, time and space symbolism and moral orientation. The article claims that the narrator is an accomplice with Emily. The case of murdering Homer Barron symbolizes the last battle of the civil war.Faulkner holds a complicated view towards the old south. On the one hand,he criticizes the corrupt slavery system and the out-dated stereotype of American south. On the other hand,he misses the life under the plantation system and has a great fear of machine's aggression.
