Paradise or Dangerous Space: Public Bathroom and Social Life of Shanghai in the Republic of China

公共浴室在民国时期上海的城市生活中扮演着重要的角色,它不仅是清洁与保健场所、休闲与社交中心,还是一个庞大的劳务市场。但主流舆论中的公共浴室却弊病丛生,它藏污纳垢、滋生惰性、混乱不堪。无论是在中国官方还是租界当局的设想中,公共浴室都应该是一个单纯的卫生设施,但这种设想在付诸实践时遭遇了巨大挑战并最终失败。究其原因,以"现代性"为表征的国家权力对地方性知识的蔑视是导致改革"流产"的症结所在。

Public bathroom played an important role in Shanghai urban life during the Republic of China,it’s not only a body cleaning and health care place,as well as the labor market and social center.However,in the mainstream public’s opinion,the public bathroom was very terrible,full of dirt,laziness and incomparable chaos.Public bath should be a simple sanitation facility in both Chinese authorities and concession authorities’envisioning,but it faced great challenges and finally failed when the envisioning was put into practice.Looking up the root reason,we would find the contempt of state power characterized by modernity for local knowledge?was the crux that led to the"miscarriage"of reform.
