海外儒学是中国传统儒学的延伸,是儒学在海外的变体。海外儒学是知识系统,更是话语系统。它与当前海外本土社会与文化发展联系紧密。因此,海外儒学研究不只是对固定的儒学知识进行语言学研究,更是对儒学话语与本土社会文化的关系进行研究。从话语的社会学理论看,海外儒学话语研究就是考察海外儒学作为话语所具有的权力及其与本土社会的政治、经济、社会、文化之间的互动关系,即儒学变体在海外本土社会文化发展中的地位和作用,以及儒学变体在海外本土社会文化影响下的发展模式和动向。这对儒学对外传播和儒学世界化有重要意义。

Overseas Confucianism is an extension and a variant of the Chinese traditional Confucianism abroad.Overseas Confucianism,being a knowledge system,is more a discourse system,closely related to the current development of the overseas local society and culture.Therefore,the study of Confucianism abroad is not merely a linguistic approach to fixed Confucian knowledge,but more an investigation of the relationship between Confucianism as a discourse and the overseas local social culture.The study of overseas Confucian discourse is to examine its power and the interactive relationship between the overseas variant of Confucianism and the local politics,economy,society and culture,i.e.,the position and function of a Confucian variant,as well as the evolving mode and trend of it,in the development of the local social culture.This is of great significance to international transmission and globalization of Confucianism.
