The Founding of Tianjin YMCA: Based on the YMCA Archives

1895年,第一位专职青年会干事入华,在两个月的时间里成立了第一个中华基督教青年会--"天津基督教青年会"。作为一个宗教机构,该会在成立之初便在天津各官立学校内征得会员500人,可谓成绩斐然。研究发现,这些成果与基督教青年会的性质,当时的社会背景,在华传教团体对该协会的帮助,天津的地理优势以及来会理对天津基督教青年会的定位等密切相关。

In 1895, the first YMCA director entered China. Within two months, he founded the first Chinese YMCA--Tianjin YMCA. As a religious institution, it has made remarkable achievements in recruiting 500 members from Tianjin’s government schools since its establishment. These achievements are closely related to the nature of the YMCA, the social background at that time, the help of missionary groups in China to the YMCA, the geographical advantages of Tianjin and the positioning of Tianjin YMCA by Lyon.
