Objective: This study aims to find the status and prevalence of suicidal ideation among the population aged 60 years and over living in nursing homes. Methods: The relevant studies were searched in electronic databases(Pub Med,Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Wanfang Database, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chongqing VIP Database and China Biomedical Database), bibliographies of retrieved articles were also searched. The pooled prevalence of suicidal ideation among nursing home elderly was calculated. The difference in prevalence of suicidal ideation among elderly with different characteristics was explored. Results: A total of 10 studies were included with 2628 subjects. The prevalence of suicidal ideation among elderly living in nursing homes ranged from 5.6% to 53.5%. The pooled prevalence was 21.0%(95% CI: 14.3%-27.6%). Subgroup analyses showed the prevalence was higher in females(23.0%) than in males(20.2%), in widowed elderly(17.6%) than in married elderly(10.4%). In three subgroups of age, 60-69, 70-79 and ≥ 80, the prevalence was 22.3%, 13.6% and 31.8% respectively. Conclusion: The high prevalence of suicidal ideation among nursing home elderly indicate the major public health significance of this condition and suggest a need for further research on its influencing factors and interventions.
