收录在“西域考察探险大系”中的《外交官夫人回忆录》,乃不同时期两位英国外交官夫人对喀什噶尔的回忆。其中一部为凯瑟琳•马嘎特尼于1931年所著《一个外交官夫人对喀什噶尔的回忆》,此游记以作者踏上旅途为始,回到英国作结。凯瑟琳•马嘎特尼在此游记中分别为自己建构了故土中小家碧玉式的淑女、旅途中不断自我突破的探险者和异域中优越的外交官夫人三重形象。由此可见作者面对英国的受众进行异域书写时,在其女性形象与大英帝国子民之间的徘徊和调适。此研究有助于人们进一步了解游记背后的文化倾向以及作品中的新疆乃至中国形象呈现的缘由。

The memoir of the diplomat's wife,which is included in the Western Regions Expedition Department,records the memories of the two British diplomats′wives to the kashgar in different periods.One of them,An English Lady in Chinese Turkestan by Catharine Magartney,was published in 1931.Katherine Margartney constructed three images for herself in her travels:the Jasper lady of her native place,the self-breaking Explorer on her journey and the superior diplomat′s wife in foreign countries.This shows the author′s hesitate and adjustment between the female image and the people of the British Empire when she is writing to the British audience.This research will help people to further understand the cultural tendency behind the travel notes and the reasons for the image of Xinjiang and even China in the works.
