The Exploration by the Communist Party of China(CPC) on the Theory of National Reunification over the Past Seven Decades

上世纪40年代末50年代初台湾问题产生以来,解决台湾问题、实现祖国完全统一始终是中国共产党历代领导人勠力以求的目标。党和国家领导人也根据两岸关系发展的不同时代背景提出了相应的战略思想,从毛泽东时期的武力解放为主、并适时提出和平解决台湾问题的思路,到邓小平确立“和平统一、一国两制”的方针,直至形成新时代坚持“一国两制”和推进祖国统一的基本方略,70年来中国共产党对祖国统一问题的理论探索不断丰富和发展。2019年1月2日,习近平总书记在《告台湾同胞书》发表40周年纪念会上的重要讲话首次全面系统阐述了新时代推进祖国和平统一的重大政策主张,进一步推动了中国共产党对台战略和祖国和平统一思想的发展与创新,为两岸关系和平发展指明了方向。

Ever since the Taiwan Question emerged in the late 1940s and early 1950s,resolving the Taiwan Question to realize China’s complete reunification has always been a goal proactively pursued by the leaders of CPC.During this process,strategic thoughts with distinctive features have been formed according to changes in the historical backdrop of cross-Straits relations.In Mao Zedong’s era,he proposed that Taiwan’s liberation should be achieved mainly by force while thoughts on peaceful solution being put forward at appropriate time.Deng Xiaoping set the general principle of peaceful reunification and“One Country,Two Systems”.In the new era,the fundamental strategy of“One Country,Two Systems”to move toward national reunification has been established.Over the past seven decades,CPC has made unremitting efforts to further deepen its exploration on national reunification.On January 2nd 2019,Xi Jinping,General Secretary of CPC,delivered a speech at a gathering to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of issuing Message to Compatriots in Taiwan,and for the first time ever,comprehensively elaborated on the major policy initiatives to push forward peaceful reunification of the Chinese nation,which not only serves as a major innovation of CPC’s strategies towards Taiwan and thoughts of peaceful reunification,but also points to the right direction for the development of cross-Straits relations in the years ahead.
