Zeng Guofan’s Thoughts on Family Education in His Family Letters

晚清名臣曾国藩治家谨肃,教子有方。在其家书中保留了很多治家教子的篇章和内容。曾国藩的治家思想可概括为以孝顺事长上、以友爱待兄弟、以爱敬睦族邻、以谦敬教子侄、以勤俭守寒素、以规训齐门内、以耕读继家声等几个方面。曾国藩的为学思想以"专"和"恒"为核心。曾国藩的修身思想则大约可归于刚、谦、敬、恕数端。

Zeng Guofan, a well-known high-ranking official in the late Qing Dynasty, managed his family affairs with preciseness and seriousness and brought up his children properly. His letters to his family cover a lot on how to manage a household and cultivate the children. Zeng Guofan’s thoughts on household management revealed in his family letters could be summed up in several aspects: respecting the elders with obedience, treating the brothers with love and respect, treating the neighbors with esteem, maintaining austerity with diligence and thrifty, regulating families with rules and disciplines, inheriting family traits by farming and reading. In the process of pursuing studies, Zeng Guofan underlined the importance of perseverance and being specialize in a field. In respect of morality cultivation, Zeng Guofan cultivated the young generations to be intelligent and capable, modest and self-effacing, respectful and discreet, generous and placid.
