Among numerous interpretations upon the function of tragic Catharsis,Prof. Zhu Guangqian goes beyond the limitation of semantic discussion and comprehensively expounds the medical,aesthetic and moral functions of tragedy. From a dynamic psychological point of view,his Purgative theory illuminates the path of self-transcendence which leads from emotional expression to moral sublimation.Taking Catharsis as the research point and referring to relevant discussions in modern psychology,this paper attempts to describe the mental mechanism of tragic aesthetic activities from the perspective of Purgative Theory,and clarify the cathartic roles of tragedy in spiritual healing and moral elevation.
