Wang Ya, twice posted as Prime-Minister of the Tang dynasty, died for his involvement in ’Ganlu Incident’. His collection of paintings and calligraphy were already attractive to the historian of the late Tang and the Five-Dynasty periods, and highly respected by the scholars and collectors of the Northern-Song times. However, there is no mention in the Tang history of art collection. The analysis of Wang Ya’s experience revealed the cases of bribery, influence peddling in the process of the fine art purchasing and reselling, the social network and the lane space in the political-social formation of Chang’an under Emperor Wenzong’s (文宗) administration by reverting the abstract historical allusions to real historical events. The case study of Wang Ya offers a glimpse at the art collection history of the late Tang dynasty by tracing the transition from the imperial court to the hand of the nobleman, officials and scholars in the Tang dynasty.
