Stuart Hall’s cultural study focuses on cultural politics.Hall insists that in philosophy the economic basis determines the superstructure,and emphasizes the role of culture in the construction of society.In the light of the changes of ideology in British capitalist society,he believes that cultural study cannot be separated from the study of ideology and politics.He attaches great importance to the instrumental role of linguistics,and links cultural politics study with discourse principles,reveals the formation of culture and the way ideology works.Through the representation,the polysemy and complexity of ideology and cultural power are expounded.His study on cultural politics is a kind of practical criticism,which emphasizes the heterogeneous elements in the whole culture,and tries to find the political significances behind cultural phenomena and the potential resistance factors of capitalist society.
