Many details in Dante’s Divine Comedy show that he knew the Trojan story in Greek mythology, but because there was no Latin translation of Homer’s epics then,Dante’s knowledge of the story mainly came from Ovid and Virgil. In addition, appearing in the late Roman Empire, two pseudo-books about the Trojan War under the name Dares and Dicty were widely circulated in the Middle Ages. The story of Troilus and Cressida derived from them influenced Shakespeare through Chaucer and other writers like Boccaccio.
