A Restricted View on English Presentation of Water Margin in Chinese Literary Textbooks

在英语学界,自1901年翟理斯(Herbert Allen Giles,1845—1935)在其撰写的《中国文学史》中首次对《水浒传》介绍以来,这部中国古典小说一直被不同时期用英语写成的中国文学教材所关注。这些文学教材的产生与当时它们所处的国际汉学环境息息相关,它们对《水浒传》的介绍和评论经历了对内容进行浅显概括,逐渐发展到系统、专业、成熟的过程。

Since the first introduction of Water Margin(ShuihuZhuan)in A History of Chinese Literature by Herbert Allen Giles’in 1901,this Chinese classic novel has been the focus of the anthology of Chinese literature history written in English in different periods.The emergence of these anthologies of literary history is closely related to the international sinology environment they were in at that time.The introduction and comments on Water Margin have experienced a simple generalization of the content,and gradually developed into a systematic professional mature process.
