深度翻译中的译者角色与翻译策略——以金安平《论语》英译本为例

On the Characteristics and Methods of Thick Translation in Chinese Philosophy Translation:A Case Study of Chin Annping’s English Translation of Confucius’ Analects

深度翻译不仅是一种理论,也是一种翻译策略。2014年,美国华裔历史学家、耶鲁大学金安平教授的《论语》英译本由企鹅经典出版,该译本所蕴含副文本的元素,呈现出典型的深度翻译特征。本文以其为个案,归纳译本中的序、前言、附录和文献目录体现出的深度翻译特征,并通过分析译文的评注,探讨深度翻译时的译者角色,以及结合译文中的注释,尝试总结深度翻译时的翻译策略,以期为中华典籍翻译和学术外译,带来借鉴和启示。

Thick translation can not only be regarded as a theory but also as one translation method. In 2014, a new English version of Confucius’ Analects by American Chinese historian Chin Annping, published by Penguin Classics, whose paratexts showed many characters of thick translation. The paper firstly tries to prove thick translation theory is valid in Chin’s peritexts including preface, introduction, appendix and bibliography. By analyzing the commentaries and interlinear notes in Chin’s version, the paper also aims to summarize translator’s role and translation strategies in the process of thick translation, which will show some highlights in philosophy translation in the future.
