The Exploration of Cold War Detente in Northeast Asia and The First Exploration of Reconciliation between North Korea and South Korea

上世纪七十年代,中美、中日关系的相继改善为朝韩和解提供了契机。围绕着缓和紧张关系,探索和平统一,朝韩双方积极展开接触与对话。最终在1972年7月4日签署了双方自分裂以来的首个共同声明,即《7·4共同声明》。然而,东北亚冷战格局的持续存在导致朝韩在安全利益上呈现零和特性,并由此衍生出严重的互不信任。其结果是朝韩均未能抓住此次对话的机遇弥合分歧、实现双边关系正常化。而这也为后来朝韩间一系列失败的对话埋下了隐患。

The successive improvement of China-U.S.relations and China-Japan relations in the 1970s has provided an opportunity for reconciliation between North Korea and South Korea.Toward the end of easing tension and exploring peaceful reunification,North Korea and South Korea actively engaged in contacts and dialogue.The outcome was the signing of the first joint statement on July 4,1972,namely the 7·4 South and North Korea Joint Statement,the first of its kind since the North-South split.However,the persistence of Cold War conflicts in Northeast Asia preordained that the security interests of North Korea and South Korea would be incompatible as a zero-sum features,which in turn led to serious mutual distrust.As a result,neither North Korea nor South Korea was able to build upon the opportunity of this dialogue to truly resolve their differences and normalize the bilateral relationship.This would also prove to be a hidden hazard for the series of failed dialogues between North Korea and South Korea since then.
