Wen Tingyun and Li Shangyin, the representatives of the Qiyan School of poetry which has the gorgeous writing style in the late Tang Dynasty, created a large number of historical poems, which criticized the luxury and enjoyment of the life of the monarchs and officials in the South Dynasty, exposed the decadent political environment of the South Dynasty, satirized the corruption and incompetence of the monarchy in the South Dynasty, and sounded the alarm of history for the rulers of the late Tang Dynasty;they embraced the ideals and aspirations of Confucianism to enter the society, and revealed their worry about the great national and political affairs, and ambition to save the declining Tang Dynasty in their poems, showing their strong critical spirit and,broad and profound feelings of benefiting mankind. Although the style of their historical poems is gorgeous, it has "gorgeous bone".
