摘要
作为英语世界对中国文学进行整体关照的首次尝试,翟理斯(Herbert Allen Giles,1845-1935)撰写的《中国文学史》(A History of Chinese Literature),不仅对英国汉学发展做出了阶段性的总结,而且向英语世界的读者系统地展现了中国文学的全貌。其中,蒲松龄的《聊斋志异》被翟理斯视作清代文学的经典作品,在《中国文学史》中占据了一席之地,并与《红楼梦》一起列为专章,拉开了清代文学的帷幕。而翟理斯《中国文学史》对《聊斋志异》的推崇、选译及评介又在一定程度上促进了《聊斋志异》在英语世界的经典化进程。
As the first attempt by the English-speaking world to take a holistic view of Chinese literature,A History of Chinese Literature by Herbert Allen Giles(1845-1935)not only made a stage for the development of British sinology.The summary,and systematically show the whole picture of Chinese literature to the readers of the English-speaking world.Among them,Pu Songling's Stories from a Chinese Studio was regarded as a classic work of Qing Dynasty literature by Giles,and occupied a place in the History of Chinese Literature.It was listed as a special chapter together with The Dream of the Red Chamber,which opened the curtain of Qing dynasty literature.
