泰国佛教中的他者与文明化:兼谈海外民族志研究中作为方法的他者

The Others and Civilization in Thai Buddhism:On the Others as a Method in Overseas Ethnography Study

南传佛教是古代佛教王国政体的构成要素和泰族民众信仰的核心,面对西方文明的冲击,泰国社会一方面要强化南传佛教作为泰文化要素的地位,另一方面又需要确证南传佛教在世界文明体系中的位置。佛教与西方文明之间的张力在泰国的国家、社会与个人的不同层面促成了新的分类和文明化实践。本文引入他者的视角,通过描述和分析主流佛教与内部及外部他者的关联性及其相互建构,展示出当代泰国宗教与社会内在的异质性与变迁动力。试图以南传佛教在泰国的文明化为个案,强调中国人类学的海外研究应当以他者为方法,而非仅仅以他者为对象。这包含三个方面的含义:不是简单地将研究对象建构为具有内在一致性和整体主义风格的静态的文化,而是看到研究对象内部的异质性、冲突和文明化的过程;突出研究对象内部不同社会群体对文明与他者的划分,并呈现文明与他者之间的转化机制;以及通过融入历史视角和语境分析,正视研究者与被研究对象之间的同时性问题。

This paper describes and analyzes the relationship between the mainstream Buddhism and its others,which come from inside or outside of Buddhism,and shows the heterogeneity and the dynamics of change in modem Thai society.The civilization of polity,which means transforming from traditional kingdom to nation state,is the start point of civilizing Buddhism.Then this paper demonstrates the process of civilizing Buddhism from three levels such as state,society and individuals.The interaction and tension among state,society and individuals promote the direction of social change.
