Chinese Translation of Western Philosophy: Understanding and Translation

哲学的汉语翻译包含语言的转换和思想的呈现两个方面,涉及对西方语言和思想文化的理解,还涉及关于哲学这个学科的理解。在汉译哲学中,有关being的翻译与其他名词的翻译不同。being是系词,相当于是一个句法词汇,体现一种句法作用,它的含义来自于它这种句法作用,因而与它的句法作用相联系。经过多年的讨论,应该对这一点获得清晰而充分的认识,并且应该形成共识;这一认识对于理解西方哲学至关重要,对于汉译哲学的改进和发展至关重要。

Two respects are involved in the Chinese translation of Western philosophy.One is how to understand the Western languages and culture,and the other is how to understand the philosophy,a science as it is.Taking the translation of the word BEING as an example.BEING,as a copula,is a syntactical word and has its meaning from the use of its syntactical function.We should translate it into the Chinese SHI(是),which means literally copula with the sense of linking a subject and a predicate.Through the discussions of the past years,we should have a clear view about the correspondence between the word SHI(是)and the word being,and furthermore we should also realize that the point of view of this correspondence is of great importance for our understanding of Western philosophy.
