As one of the most famous translators in modern China,Li Jianwu had written down many texts about translation in the different periods of his translation career. These texts contain his translation principles and ethics, but have not been systematically studied and discussed by scholars.Li's discussions on translation focused on translators’responsibility for the original works—Cunzhen(preserving the content of the original)and Chuanshen(conveying the spirit of the original). His requirements for ideal translators—“a translator should have the mentality of an artist, and the mind and methods of a scholar”is based on the responsibility. At the same time, his emphasis on Chuanshen and his idea of comparing translation to creative work both highlights his standpoint of referring to translation as a form of art creation. When Li discussed about translation,he had repeatedly used the word of“conscience”,and the ethical connotation in this had reflected the historical context of Li's translation activities, and the call for improving translation quality of his time.
