Shen congwen borrowed from Dickens’ romanticism of taking the past as his ideal world and created a world in western Hunan to fight against the alienation and degeneration of urban civilization.This contradicts Dickens romanticism since the left-wing literature regards the future as the ideal world,which causes criticism and controversy.The result of the debate led to the disappearance of the correct understanding of Dickens’ romanticism in contemporary literature, which was a key step to make Dickens become a critical realist writer.
