摘要 The study on German history has made a great stride in recent years with a mushrooming scholarly literature in both English and Chinese. The construction of a Chinese scholarly discourse on the history of Germany has also undergone several signifi cant changes over the past decades. As early as in 1871,many Chinese intellectuals who had just opened their eyes to see the modern world, became interested in the Second German Empire—a united German nation-state established after the three dynasty wars. The initial understanding of this distant European country in China was constituted by a large number of Chinese oversea students who studied in Germany and the German military system introduced by the Westernization Movement. The translations of certain German words, which refl ected a distinctive characteristics of this country, such as“iron and blood policy”(铁血)and“Krupp”(克虏伯),expressed the wish of Chinese intellectuals who aspired to make China strong and prosperous by learning the German experiences.
