The Travel Diaries in Outer Mongolia(Part Three)

在1906年5月、6月的《游蒙日记》中,李廷玉继续以现场亲历者的视角写下博迪苏六次拜访十三世达赖喇嘛的全记录--"达赖询及藏中究竟如何情形?英人如何交涉?""朝廷新与英人订约条款若干,可否示知?""达赖询藏约事已否接回电?"……这些珍贵的当事人目击一方面展现出清政府奉旨宣慰十三世达赖喇嘛的核心场景;一方面展露出博迪苏恩威并施的政治智慧。值得一提的是,李廷玉笔下还直述十三世达赖喇嘛在蒙古期间给百姓造成巨大的经济压力,颇多信徒被荡尽家财的悲惨事实。本文将李氏著作与十三世达赖喇嘛直接对话的博迪苏所著《朔蒙纪程》手稿本逐日对照,更可看清博迪苏此次宣慰的使命必达。

In the concluding part of The Travel Diaries in Outer Mongolia written in May and June of 1906,Li Tingyu continued to diarize the meetings of Bo Disu and the 13 th Dalai Lama from a witness’ perspective-"The Dalai Lama enquired about the situation in Tibet and Britain’s negotiation";"What treatydid the imperialcourt sign with Britain? ";"The Dalai Lama asks whether there are updates on the negotiation."Li Tingyu’s wit-ness shows a vivid picture of the interactions between Qing court and the 13 th Dalai Lama, and at the same timeillustrates Bo Disu’s political wisdom. Li Tingyu also described the fact that the 13 th Dalai Lama’s visit im-posed great financial burden on the Mongolian Buddhists, some were even bankrupted. This paper compares thedaily entries of Li Tingyu in The Travel Diaries in Outer Mongolia and Bo Disu’s daily entries in Shuo Meng Ji Cheng. Thus, we are able to observe his commitment for the mission of the trip.
