The Routledge Companion to African American Literature by Miller produces a 200-page diachronic narrative of the history of the African American literature which is divided into seven periods.Every period is summarized and commented with concision. Not only does the author make a panorama of the African American literature, but also intends to historicize literary texts into their original context. After a general review of the 300 years history of the African American literature,Miller finds it hardly possible to give a definite answer to the question“What is African American literature?”Miller argues that the tradition of African American literature is neither stable nor complete because it is always growing and changing.in the so-called post-racial era,the meaning of race has changed,so the historiography of African American literature should also change accordingly. This is also the most valuable implication in Millers book.
