Incest,a cross-culture common occurence, has been conventionally associated with the American South.William Faulkner, perhaps the greatest Southern writer whose works have best probed into the psyche of the American South, has become a pivotal figure in illustrating the incest motif in Southern literature. In some of Faulkner’s fiction, such as The Sound and the Fury and Absalom,Absalom!,incest seems to lie at the heart of plot development, thematic progression, and reading excitement. The essay intends to argue that while the incestuous relationship between Caddy and her brothers in The Sound and the Fury represents the disintegration of traditional family order in the Postbellum Era,the entanglement between Judith,Henry and Charles Bon in Absalom,Absalom!reveals the troubled Southern psyche which has plagued the South for a much longer period of time. The sibling incestuous relationships in these two major novels,to some extent, can be seen as manifestations of William Faulkner’s ambivalent feelings towards his native soil.
