Newly Discovered Chu-state Bamboo Slips of Yan Being Conquered by Baiqi

2012年,荆州市纪南镇高台村一处编号为J67的战国古井出土了3枚有字残简,竹简时代大约在战国中晚期。整理者对竹简的拼合及释文有误,经本文重新整理后,可知这3枚竹简可拼合成一枚,记录的是楚顷襄王二十一年(公元前278年)白起破鄢的历史事件,这是目前发现的唯一一枚对此历史事件的即时记录,也是唯一一支可以把书写时间准确定位到楚顷襄王二十一年的战国楚简,意义非常重大。

In 2012,archaeologists discovered three Chu-state bamboo slips in an ancient well(J67)in the Gaotai Village,Jinan Town of Jingzhou City,Hubei Province.The slips,broken and with Chinese characters,date roughly to the Late Warring State Period.It is argued that the excavators might have mismatched the bamboo slips and misinterpreted the texts.The present paper suggests that the three broken,bamboo slips have belonged to the same slip,documenting a historic event that in the year of278 BC,namely the 21 th year of the King Qingxiang of the Chu State,the General Baiqi conquered the Yan.This new find has significant meanings because it is so far the only bamboo slip that documented the event as well as the only Chu-state bamboo slip of the Warring State Period that its texts relate specifically to the 21 th year of the King Qingxiang.
