How Can A Symbol Get Its Meaning By “Symbol Grounding”

“符号入场”产生于计算主义范式下的第一代人工智能及其哲学范畴,主要针对符号如何获得意义的问题。以“中文屋论证”引发的人工主体的语义问题为起点,将符号与意义、意义与指称问题逐渐统摄在“符号入场”问题之下,成为人工智能哲学中的核心问题。表征主义、半表征主义和无表征主义均尝试从不同视角使得符号得以入场,但都无法满足“零语义承诺”这一条件。因自语境化路径具有打破传统符号的离身性、无情境性特征,从符号系统自主地融入语境的角度为解决符号难以入场提供了方法。

The concept of“symbol grounding”emerged in the context of the first generation of Artificial Intelligence and its philosophical background within the paradigm of computationalism.Its main focus is on how symbols get their meaning.Beginning with the questioning of the semantic capacity of artificial agents initiated by the“Chinese Room Argument”,“symbol grounding”takes symbol and meaning as well as meaning and reference into its research paradigm,which gradually becomes the major research issues within the philosophical exploration of AI.This issue has been examined within the framework of representationalism,semi-representationalism and non-representationalism,but none of them can meet the condition of“zero semantic commitment”.Since it breaks the disembodied and decontextualized features of traditional symbol research,self-contextualization provides the strategy for solving the symbol grounding problem by combining symbolic system into context autonomously.
