Using Sartre’s existential ideas as“The world is absurd,and life is misery.”“Hell is other people.”“Existence precedes the essence.”“Free choice and responsibility.”this paper is intended to explore the protagonist’s existential predicament and free choices to get rid of predicament in the The Goldfinch of Donna Tartt.The existential interpretation of the novel reveals Tartt’s humanitarian concern for human existence,and shows a way of salvation for the protagonist Theo,that is,only through making his free choices actively and taking responsibility bravely,can he finally gain authentic existence and find the meaning of his existence.
