Different Family Backgrounds, Different Livelihoods--A Comparison of Family Background and Livelihood of Lu Longqi and Lv Liuliang

因各自家族在明代的境遇及明清易代之际的个人经历的不同,陆陇其与吕留良出处殊途,治生迥异,进而导致两人及各自家族在清代中后期的不同遭遇。陆陇其主要治生途径是处馆、书院授徒,兼以务农、时文评选和刻书。吕留良主要治生途径是时文评选、刻书,兼以务农、行医。陆陇其与吕留良是清初嘉兴士人中最典型的人物之一,通过他们的比较,对深入认识清初士人具有重要意义。

Due to their respective family status in the Ming dynasty and their distinctive personal experiences in the late Ming and early Qing period, Lu Longqi and Lv Liuliang had different family backgrounds and livelihoods, which further led to their and their families’ different circumstances and conditions in the middle and late Qing dynasty. The main livelihood of Lu Longqi was to teach in private school and academy, but he also farmed, compiled and commented on contemporary articles and published books in spare time. The main livelihood of Lv Liuliang was to compile and comment on contemporary articles and to publish books. He also farmed and practiced medicine in spare time. Lu and Lv are typical figures of the intellectuals in Jiaxing during the early Qing period and the comparative study on them is of great significance to a deep understanding of the intellectuals in this period.
