Joyce Carol Oates’A Bloodsmoor Romance was generally criticized as a parody and revision of the domestic romance in the nineteenth century in terms of its rebellious feminist concerns.Resorting to a close analysis of the narrator’s narrative authority and plot development in the novel, this paper reveals the female characters’dilemma in their rebellions against the patriarchal order. It demonstrates from two dimensions that firstly, with respect to narrative discourse, the female narrator’s narrative authority, representing the patriarchal order,is countered by the characters’ever-escaping from the narrative control;secondly, the female characters’attempts to break free from the patriarchal order’s shaping them as the Other, however, ends up in complicity with it by accepting the conventional role of marriage.
