The Story of Lucy Gault, written by William Trevor in his later years, narrates the personal trauma of Lucy using three explicit and implicit clues and taking time as the leading line, her parents and Hollyham in Ireland in the first half of the twentieth century. These individuals behave differently under passive trauma——to feel guilty,or not bear the burden, but finally all achieve self-redemption to varying degrees. The novel reflects Trevor’s anxiety about the Irish people suffering from war conflicts and religious contradictions,as well as showing his humanistic concern and high sympathy for the ordinary people under the trauma of the nation.
