On Lao Zi’s “Desire Cybernetics”--Interpretation of Cahapter 12 of Tao Te Ching

老子《道德经》有个重要命题,叫做"圣人为腹不为目",以往许多人直观地把"为腹"解释为"填饱肚子",不使自己饥寒交迫。我认为,老子的"为腹"讲的是一种功夫,代表一种生活态度。这就是把注意力由"外"引向"内",专注于性命心地的修养。为此,他告诫人们不要被外在色相所迷惑,而应该防止情欲的干扰。唯有如此,才能进入诚明感通的内观状态,达到天人合一的境界。老子这种生命技术对于当代人们的心性修养具有重要的启迪意义。

There is an important proposition in Lao Zi’s Tao Te Ching,which is called "The saint seeks to satisfy his appetite without seeking pleasure in sensuality".In the past,it was intuitively interpreted that "to satisfy his appetite" means "fill the stomach",and not to make themselves hungry and cold.In my opinion,Lao Zi’s "to satisfy the appetite" is a kind of concept,representing a kind of attitude towards life.This is the cultivation of directing attention from the "outside" to the "inside",focusing on the mind cultivation.To this end,he warned people not to be confused by external appearance,but to prevent the interference of lust.Only in this way,can we enter into the state of inner vision and reach the state of unity between man and nature.This life idea of Lao Zi is of great enlightenment to the spiritual cultivation of contemporary people.
