Published in 1927, The New Dress by Virginia Woolf is a short story that centers round Mabel’s mental activities. This paper, based on Professor Hou Weirui’s concepts of literary stylistics, explores Mabel’s self-doubt, self-loss, and self-examination,and elaborates on the mutability of the self in terms of diction, syntax, discourse, and imagery. Through a close re-reading, the paper offers a new interpretation about the artistic and philosophic implications behind and beyond the modern literary text.
