Taking the report concerning the December 9th Movement in Public Mailbox column of Public Life as examples and observing from the perspective of reading history, this paper finds that Zou Taofen imparted readers the right/power to express their subjective appeals by setting up Public Mailbox column. As a result, the two sides of journalism, i.e.,"author/text"and"reading/reader", were joined to produce the media scenes concerning the December 9th Movement in Public Life. These scenes transformed the release of impassioned emotions into rational and calm analytic thinking, and the report of news event itself into discussions of national survival. Compared with traditional top-down public opinion mobilization, this interactive form of"listening to the readers’ voice"is quite different in terms of method and function, and thus has stimulated some reflections on status and future of journalism history research.
