This paper analyzes the correlation between linguistic diversity and economic and social development indicators with the data of Ethnologue and the United Nations Development Program. The statistics show that linguistic diversity and national socioeconomic development are indeed correlated but are not the pure inverse relationship indicated by "Fishman-Pool Hypothesis". We found that USD 17,000 of gross national income( GNI) per capita is the inflection point. The correlation between language diversity and economic development in countries with GNI per capita below USD 17,000 are significantly negative. Conversely, countries with GNI per capita above the inflection point USD 17,000 show a significant positive correlation between two indexes. Based on this result, the contradiction between the "Fishman-Pool Hypothesis"and the Fishman( 1991) study can be reasonably explained. However, the correlation between linguistic diversity and the national socioeconomic development index reflects only a probabilistic trend rather than the causal relationship. In addition to focusing on the relationship between language and economic development,we must also pay attention to the interaction between language and social development factors such as education and quality of life.
