The poet Philippe Jaccottet has been an "inhabitant of Grignan" since 28 years old. Living in this small town located in the south of France, he keeps a deep attachment to Mediterranean landscape. In the poetic prose collection Paysages avec figures absentes, Jaccottet associates Mediterranean space with his ideal "home" and reveals three fundamental constituents of this space: "exaltation", "perfection" and "light". In the Mediterranean, the poet has discovered some spiritual relics from ancient Greek and Roman times. For Jaccottet, this land full of connotations is a "reflection of Cosmos", and allows him to surpass the limits of Time and Space. Since then, he has been searching for an Origin, not in imagination or reminiscence, but in the smallest elements of Nature, which are real "messengers" of the beautiful and rigorous cosmic order.
