以西方马克思主义为代表的部分学者认为马克思创立历史唯物主义偏重社会历史领域的研究,而恩格斯由于自然辩证法则主要关注自然领域,形成了“马恩分裂说”的错解。源于对历史唯物主义自然维度缺失的判断,生态马克思主义者提出重建历史唯物主义,试图重构其生态思想。无论是“马恩分裂说”还是生态马克思主义对自然观的重构,基于研究重心的差异而得出历史唯物主义自然维度缺失,本质上都是对历史唯物主义的误读。从历史唯物主义理论隐含着自然的优先性和人的自然本质这个前提来看,历史唯物主义强调自然对人类社会形成的基础作用、其理论架构中生产力与生产关系所蕴含的人与自然之间相互作用关系以及对人与自然关系和解的终极解答。可见,生态思想从未在历史唯物主义中缺场,当前生态问题以及中国生态文明建设都能在这里找到理论支点和现实旨趣。

Some western Marxism scholars believe that the historical materialism founded by Marx lays particular stress on the study of social and historical fields, while Engels focused on the field of nature, forming a misunderstanding of the Marxist theory of division. Historical materialism emphasizes the fundamental role of nature in the formation of human society, the interactive relationship between man and nature contained in productivity and production relations in its theoretical framework, and the ultimate solution to the reconciliation between man and nature.
