On Zhang Zhidong’s Views on Education

张之洞通经致用的教育观包括知识论、品德修养论和读书方法论。张之洞认为获得知识的途径是读书,读书的目的是通经致用和治身心,慎择约取、古今兼顾是知识学习的原则;在品德修养上,张之洞要求士人“德行谨厚”“砥砺气节”“人品高峻”“习尚俭朴”“立志远大”;在读书方法上,张之洞提出读书宜有定课、宜有门径、宜择、宜博等方法。

Zhang Zhidong’s views on education about application of classics in practice include knowledge acquirement,moral cultivation and reading methods.He believes that the way to acquire knowledge is to read books while the purpose of reading is to apply the classics to cultivation of mind,and the principles of learning include prudent choice of books and extensive reading.In terms of moral cultivation,he requires scholars to be honest,virtuous,ambitious,frugal,live a plain life and keep moral integrity.In terms of reading methods,he suggests that learners should have setting content,right methods,read books extensively but carefully chosen.
