The Mirror of Others:John Fryer’s Views on Chinese Literature

本文基于《傅兰雅档案》史料,对傅兰雅的中国文学观进行了系统梳理与研究,得出如下结论:傅兰雅将经史子集四部及时文分别与西方文学的相应文类进行比较,为西方读者系统呈现中国文学;他辨证地看待中国文学,认为中国文学具有历史优越性与发展性,但"缺乏想象和创新",具有"功利性",中国文学的语言与时文存在一定弊端,并认为中国文学因一些微妙特质而具有"不可译性"。傅兰雅的中国文学观对当今中国文学的健康发展与海外传播有一定的借鉴意义。

Based on historical documents,this paper systematically elaborates and studies John Fryer’s views on Chinese literature,and comes to the following conclusions.John Fryer compared the four subsets of Chinese classics and history and normal essays with the corresponding categories of Western literature,thus systematically presenting Chinese literature to Western readers.He treated Chinese literature dialectically,holding that Chinese literature had historical superiority and development,but lacked imagination and innovation,being too utilitarianoriented.There were shortcomings in the language and style of Chinese literature.He also argued that Chinese classics were untranslatable because of their subtle characteristics.John Fryer’s views on Chinese literature had definite significance for the healthy development of contemporary Chinese literature and for the overseas dissemination of Chinese literature.
